In addition to retirement benefits, Social Security provides disability benefits to people who have worked and earned enough credits to qualify.  

Claimants must also meet the standard for proving that they are disabled. Generally, this requires proof that a physical or mental impairment, or combination of impairments, prevents a person from performing any type of substantial gainful employment. It may also require proof that the condition has lasted for a year or more, or is expected to last for a year or more, or will result in death.  The standards are strict and complex. 

Usually, an individual files his or her own claim for benefits at the local Social Security office (for people in the Roanoke area, that office is located at 116 North Jefferson Street in Roanoke.) 

If the initial claim is denied, the claimant has 60days from receipt of the denial to file a request for hearing before an administrative law judge. 

Further appeals may go to the Appeals Council and the federal court system.  Benefits available include monthly payments and eligibility for Medicare insurance.
